What kind of DNA tests do you have available?
Saliva, which is more common and cost effective or Blood, which is not as common and more expensive
How accurate is DNA testing for the purposes of determining paternity?
DNA testing is the best available method for determining paternity. All human beings receive half of their DNA profile from their
biological mother and half from their biological father. For DNA testing, DNA is extracted from samples submitted by all participants.
The DNA samples are then analyzed using 13 or more well characterized DNA markers. These markers are detected using a chemical reaction
called the polymerase chain reaction (or PCR). The final result is a "barcode" pattern like those found on packaged foods in the grocery
store. If the alleged father's barcode pattern is completely different from the child's barcode pattern, then the alleged father cannot
be the biologic father and is therefore excluded from being the father of that child. If they share DNA patterns in common and data is
complete, then the alleged father is the biologic father with greater than 99.99% probability.
Which one is more accurate? How accurate are the results?
They are both quite accurate and it all depends on your preference and/or what your court order states.
-
For a Legal DNA (Court Admissible Test) it is about 99.9% accurate.
-
For a Non-Legal DNA Test it all depends if the collection of the specimens were done properly according to the instructions.
I've heard that blood samples are more accurate than cheek swabs. Is this true?
Absolutely not. DNA can be obtained from many sources. Every cell in our body contains the same DNA pattern. We have experienced excellent
success using our cheek swab sample collection methods.
Are the test results confidential?
California DNA, provides confidential results to all parties involved. Due to security and privacy issues, test results cannot be reported
by telephone or e-mail. Samples are tested only for the specific test requested. Although results can be subpoenaed by the court, test results
cannot be reported by telephone or e-mail due to security and privacy issues.
What about confidentiality?
Information of any kind regarding a case will not be released to anyone other than the tested parties and their named representatives without written order.
Can a paternity testing be performed without the mother participating?
Yes, although a mother's sample is suggested, our methods of DNA testing are so accurate and conclusive that testing can be performed without
the mother's sample. The fee for such testing is the same as if we were testing with the mother's sample. If you need to utilize the Court
Admissible Paternity Test, you must provide identification for the child and sign a form stating that you have the legal authority to have
the child tested.
Do I need a court order to have testing performed?
We do work with many doctors and lawyers; however their permission or formal request is not needed for California DNA, to perform genetic tests.
Does the child have to be a certain age to have a DNA paternity test?
No, but the child needs to be born already. Although it is possible to perform paternity testing using umbilical cord blood, we do not provide
this service. We use cheek (buccal) swabs instead.
Do I need to have my DNA samples collected at a specific location?
- For NON LEGAL Paternity Screening NO, we will send you an easy to use home collection kit and specific instructions for its proper use.
You can use this kit as a Jane or John Doe and the collection can be done at home.
- YES, For the Court Admissible paternity test, samples are collected by a professional technician. Safeguards are taken to assure the
strict chain of custody is well documented. California DNA conducts collections at Unisource Screening in Rancho Cucamonga, California or will
facilitate a collection site in your area.
Why use the Non Legal paternity test instead of the Court Admissible Paternity Test?
- Cost: Many families want to know true parentage, but are not interested in pursuing legal actions. These families should not pay the extra
costs or put up with the inconvenience involved with the court admissible test.
- Privacy: Samples are collected in the PRIVACY of your home. A man can confirm whether he is the biological father of a child without anyone
else knowing a test is being performed. Results are only sent to the person requesting the test. Additional copies of the test results can be
sent to outside parties only at the request of the person initiating the testing process.
- Turn-around time: Results are mailed out within 5-15 business days from the date our laboratory receives the samples.
What is the strict chain of custody required for the Court Admissible Paternity Test?
- Samples must be collected by a professional collection facility.
- Proof of Identity (photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, etc.) of the person giving the samples is required at the time of sample collection.
- A photo of each person providing a sample is taken.
- The care professional provides a "sworn statement" affirming that he or she collected samples from the identified person.
- The care professional forwards the samples by express courier in sealed protective pouches to California DNA's Laboratory.
